Extended Essay

Create a brainstorm using the following.

1. Which Global politics topics are you most interested in? Remember this can be a topic we haven't studied yet. 

2. Think about where you are going to be this summer. How is the area connected to the areas of Global politics you've chosen?

3. Roughly think about possible primary research you could do. Is the topic feasible within the scope of an Extended Essay?

Now that you've identified your research question and sub-questions you are ready to begin the two tasks to be completed by the end of May.

1. Complete your background research using secondary data. Your aim is to make yourself an expert on the topic. You may find that you are able to answer the first sub-question already.

2. Design a methodology for your primary data collection. This includes making any questionnaires/ interview questions/ data collection tables. 

We will meet together on the EE day in June for a final check before you leave for the summer. 

Start by writing a bullet point plan of your essay in the form of 'sub-headings'. Add a provisional word count for each section. 

• 1. Introduction- including research question and thesis statement 300 words

  2. Section 1- A paragraph setting the section point followed by several PEEL paragraphs exploring the different aspects of the point. 850 words

  3. Repeat for sections 2-4. 850 words each. 

  4. Conclusion- refer back to RQ, thesis statement and Sections 1-4. 300 words

From your provisional plan you can then begin writing the essay, section by section. 

Avoid spending too long on the introduction as you should always edit that when you have finished the body of the essay to ensure it matches what you actually talk about. 

Never leave referencing to the end. Always keep track of sources of information and cite as you go.
